Syktyvkar State University, established in 1972 and named after Russian American sociologist Pitirim Sorokin, is the main university in Syktyvkar. It is one of the largest higher education institutions in North-West Russia. Currently, it has over 9,000 students and more than 600 academic staff.
In March 2009, the university set up the Sorokin Research Center to research and publish archive materials on Pitirim Sorokin from international sources. Syktyvkar State University is also connected with the Russian Mineralogical Society.
The university has 12 institutes offering 154 educational programs at all levels. It provides about 30 bachelor’s degree programs and 26 master’s degree programs in natural sciences, technology, law, humanities, art, education, medicine, and economics and management. The fields of international scientific cooperation include ecology, biology, chemistry, medicine, economics, philology, and art and design.
In addition to these specializations, the university conducts nearly 40 international scientific educational projects and regularly hosts international and all-Russian scientific conferences.
