Medical University of Silesia

The Medical University of Silesia has a history of over sixty years. It was established in 1948 as the Medical Academy in Rokitnica Bytomska. In its first five years, the University had only one School of Medicine and a Dentistry Department. However, it quickly grew by opening many clinical and theoretical units to offer a complete education.

In the late 1950s, a decision was made to move the University’s campus to Katowice, and this was completed in 1971. The headquarters of the Medical University of Silesia was moved to Katowice, making it the largest medical school in Poland. Three new schools were opened: the School of Pharmacy with the Unit of Medical Analytics, a second School of Medicine, and the School of Nursing (later included in the second School of Medicine). After 2000, the University expanded further by opening the School of Health Care in 2001 and the School of Public Health in 2002.

The University has grown into a large higher education institution. It now has five schools offering 16 fields of study, preparing specialists for various roles in the community and the national health care system. The Medical University of Silesia educates over 9,000 students, including PhD and postgraduate students. The University also offers classes in English (English Program) for students from around the world.
